Bushwick | Chelsea | Dumbo | Site inférieur Est East Village | SoHo | Upper East Side | Williamsburg

With more than a thousand art galleries and thousands of art dealers, New York City is without a doubt the art capital of the world. Our New York art gallery guide is an ongoing effort to create a comprehensive online art guide to the New York City contemporary art scene. When planning your stay you might want to check out Kayak for places to stay and things to do.

Chelsea

With a dense population of galleries, Chelsea boasts a thriving art scene for established and upcoming artists alike. Blue chip galleries like the Gagosian, Pace Gallery, Yvon Lambert, and Marlborough offer high-end and high-class art experiences from across the spectrum. They and many other well-known galleries make Chelsea a go-to stop for any art appreciator, tourist, artist, and collector visiting or living in NYC.

For Artists:

Though the “big name” galleries like the Gagosian, Pace, and Malborough may be difficult for newer artists to break into, the thriving gallery culture has attracted many art galleries specifically geared toward giving a stage to less established artists. Whether you are an artist looking to increase your exposure in the NYC art market, or just looking for a good place to wander around and appreciate a vast collection of artwork from every medium and style - you need look no further than Chelsea.

For Visitors:

With such an art-intensive culture, you can’t walk 500 ft in any direction without encountering something exciting to gape at, whether spraypainted on the side of an auto shop or hanging on the wall of a gallery.

The High Line: Running from West 30th Street to Gansevoort Street, this once-abandoned elevated rail line has become one of the most beautiful parks in all of Manhattan. The High Line boasts a thriving public art scene, plenty of places to eat, one-of-a-kind architecture, and an extraordinary view of the New York skyline and Hudson River. Many artists and architects have worked to make the High Line the unique experience it is today, and any visitor of the Chelsea neighborhood would be remiss not to check it out.

Hotel Chelsea: Famous for the many artistic greats who have stayed there, Hotel Chelsea is a landmark located on 23rd Street, a short walk away from Agora Gallery. The long, impressive roster of past guests include Bob Dylan, William S. Burroughs, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Willem de Kooning, Allen Ginsberg, and Jasper Johns. See where Andy Warhol filmed his 1966 film, Chelsea Girls. See where Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the Hotel Chelsea was recently bought for $80 million and is currently under renovation.

Some of the galleries you may want to check out when visiting the area include:

Of course, with over 400 galleries in the area, Chelsea certainly does offer plenty of choices. Take advantage of the online resource, chelseagallerymap.com - also available as an app for iOS!
